One of the original 9 hole golf courses built in Colorado is Longmonts Sunset Golf Course. Laid out for 25 bucks a day by Denver golf pro Mr. Groesbeck (first name unknown to us at this point) in 1922, Sunset is a step back to the traditional course of the day. Narrow tree lined fairways, and mostly small greens with the occasional well placed bunker. In those days they were all sand greens, and Sunset remained that way until irrigation was installed in the early 70’s.

Todays course will greet you with one of the best views of # 1 around, a wonderful view of Longs Peak. As I described, mature Cottonwoods line every hole, and dominate the course.  This offers a challenge for sure, and I suggest that unless you are very accurate off the tee, you should consider your 3 wood.

One of the longer holes is # 4 at 420 yards, a slight uphill, dogleg right that requires a well placed tee shot, to about a twenty yard wide landing area 250 yards on left side of the fairway. The reason for the tight landing zone is that there are those pesky Cottonwoods all down the right side. The 2nd shot for the average golfer is normally a long iron or Hybrid into an “isolated” green. A spacious bunker on the left, a hill and OB through the green, and OB to the right. Club down, hope for a good role is a safe play.

That describes just one hole, the remaining 8 offer a real challenge not only skill wise, but thinking wise too. A note to ponder. Every year, Sunset is the humbler during the City of Longmont Open Championship. Whom ever the leader is coming, is not going out, and has usually given up a bunch of strokes to this Historic jewel in Longmont Colorado.
